Sure Sell

When you're getting ready to sell, think about what you can do to improve the look of your home. There are a lot of small, manageable projects you can undertake to spruce up your home, and enhance the sale. The first thing you want to do is take on the battle cry: Declutter! Even after living in a home for a short time, most people amass an inordinate amount of 'stuff.' Buyers have a difficult time seeing around the clutter in closets, basements, and even the living areas. You'll not only do your sale efforts a favor, but you'll be more prepared to move on once your house does sell.

You may be selling your home because you've outgrown it. You've found a new house with more room for the massive bedroom furniture you inherited from Grandma, and the huge sectional sofa your sister gave you before she moved to France. The new house has miles of bookshelves, too, to properly display the ever-growing collection that's now stacked everywhere. In the meantime, though, this stuff is making your current home look cluttered and cramped.

Rent storage space for things you want to keep, but that are detracting from the look of your for-sale home. What you don't want or no longer need can be carted off to the Goodwill, or offered in a garage sale. Don't just stack everything in the garage. That's a sure sign to buyers that you don't have adequate storage space.

Buyers want a tidy interior so they can view the home without looking through, past and around clutter. Clear off counter tops, vanities, dressers, desks, and any other surface where clutter tends to grow. If the desk in your home office is tidy and clutter-free, buyers will see that the space works as it is intended. If the sewing room is bursting with everything from snow tires to sports equipment, buyers will see that there's not enough storage space.

Leave little to the imagination. If you have a deck, arrange some outdoor furniture and a grill to suggest outdoor entertaining. If you have a spare room in the basement, show that it can be used as a hobby room, for example. Make every room in your house work, but make sure no room is clogged with clutter.

Bright and spacious is the look you're after to show off all the best your home has to offer.
