Carpet Cleaning

Before moving into your new home, you may want to have the carpets cleaned. Certainly this task is easier before your furniture and belongings are in place. Carpeting is a sizable investment so choosing the right carpet cleaner is important in your efforts to protect it. Call several companies, ask each the same questions, compare prices and check with your friends and neighbors for references.

When you contact each company, find out if there is a square footage limitation and if your room sizes fit within those guidelines. Ask about hallways, walk-in closets and carpeted bathrooms. Some companies may count a hallway as a 'room' and then price accordingly. Other companies figure cost by square foot. In this case, measure each room, multiply the length times the width and then add up all the square footage to get a fairly accurate price.

Ask each company what method they use to clean the carpets. Steam cleaning or extraction is the preferable method. A truck mounted unit will generate far more power than a portable unit brought into the house. Make sure the company uses hot water, which removes greasy, stubborn soil build-up that cold water will not. Most companies will hook up to your cold water, usually outside and then heat the water as it flows to the truck.

Be sure the company uses trained individuals who clean carpets for a living. Ask about insurance in the event that the furniture is damaged or a wall marred. Most companies charge more if their personnel move the furniture; less if you have the furniture out of the way before they arrive. Tell each company that you have not moved into the house and that the rooms are free of furnishings.

Before the cleaners arrive, pick up any small items from the carpet and vacuum. Open as many windows as the temperature permits and if you cannot leave the house open, leave the air conditioning or heat on, whichever is appropriate. You can hasten drying time by setting fans to blow across the carpet. Do not set furniture or fans on the wet carpet.

Despite how 'clean' your shoes may look, wash the soles before padding across damp carpets. Allow ample time for the carpets to dry thoroughly before arranging your furniture on it.
