Your Good Credit - Part 3

YOUR GOOD CREDIT continues this month with the third in a four part series on polishing your credit and keeping it in good shape.

Good credit can be your best friend - bad credit your worst enemy. It's vitally important to protect this asset and reduce your vulnerability. We are all aware of identity theft but there's no need to panic. If you are a victim, you will be required to prove your innocence. But, as with everything in life, prevention is best.

Guard your social security number as a hidden treasure. It is the key that opens the door into your life and allows a clever thief to steal your identity. Never carry your Social Security card in your purse or wallet and only give out the number when absolutely necessary. Never, ever put your social security number on items such as a check. Memorize the number, instead. It's a good idea not to carry any important information such as a birth certificate or passport unless you are using them.

Keep a watchful eye on credit cards. If you are due a new card, mark your calendar. If the card or billing statement does not arrive on time, notify the company immediately. Cancel cards you are not using and put passwords on everything. Using your Mother's maiden name is not a good idea. It's too easy for the would-be thief to gain that information.

Cross-shredders are not expensive and prevent 'dumpster divers' from gaining access to your personal information. Some even shred old credit cards. Use them for anything that would compromise your privacy.

If you use on-line banking or purchase on-line items with a credit card, you can tighten your security options by using a password that has random numbers and letters.

So, what do you do if you lose your good credit name? How do you recover? That's the subject of the fourth installment. Stay tuned.
