Your Good
Credit - Part 4
YOUR GOOD CREDIT continues this month with the fourth in a four part
series on polishing your credit and keeping it in good shape.
Whether your credit has suffered through negligence or some unforeseen
circumstance, you can still buy the home of your dreams. Even with
the best of intentions, you can get in financial trouble. Divorce,
illness or a job loss can be devastating.
It may take time and diligence, but there are ways to make your
dream a reality. You may need to work out a strict budget and stick
with it. Giving up vacations and nice dinners is a small price to
pay for building your future. Offers of credit that come to you in
the mail may seem tempting, but if you wish to reach your goal, tear
them up.
Pay off your balances as quickly as possible and send every payment
a few days ahead of schedule. Sometimes checks are delayed in the
mail and some companies don't post immediately. You don't want to be
late, even if it's not your fault. Make sure your credit bureau has
your most current payment history by sending them documentation on
employment and creditors.
But, what if you are in so deep, you are considering bankruptcy? You
might be well served to check out a reputable counselor. Asking for
help will go a long way to keep you on track and get you back on
your financial feet, so to speak. Choose counseling carefully and
only if you feel you have no alternative. A good on-line site for
information is http://www.usdoj.gov/ust.
Remember, this information will be on your credit report and
considered by lenders. But it is far less damaging than bankruptcy
which remains on your credit history for 10 years. You want to
establish yourself as someone who is worthy of a mortgage and a
secure financial future.
