Did you know that a
dwelling is burglarized once every 15 seconds? That's according to
FBI statistics. There are no guarantees, but there are steps you can
take to make your home less attractive to a burglar.
The easiest thing to do is make your home
look as though it is always occupied. Most break-ins occur during
the day when everyone is away at work or school. Automatic timers
for lights, the TV or radio should be set for random times. When you
return home, park your cars in the garage and keep the doors shut.
Otherwise, the burglar might pick out a pattern of behavior that
signals when you're not at home.
Trim trees and bushes so there is a clear
view of your windows and doors. A burglar hiding in the bushes could
just wait there for the right opportunity. And even the nosiest of
neighbors might not be aware of their hidden danger. Add outdoor
lighting to dissuade them even further.
It's tempting to leave a note on your door
for delivery people, but that's a dead giveaway to burglars. Arrange
to have deliveries when you are at home or get a friend or neighbor
to house sit for you that morning.
Vacation time poses a problem but there
are a number of things you can do beyond the above suggestions.
First, tell a trusted neighbor that you will be away and ask them to
keep watch for you. Have them use your trash cans and put the refuse
out on the pick-up day. A clever burglar will check. Forward your
calls to your cell phone or to a friend's home. And consider adding
a system with a timer to open and close your draperies. Extended
time away will call for having someone care for the lawn
maintenance. Anything you can do to make it appear you are at home
will help prevent a break in.
Of course, don't forget about proper locks for your doors
and windows. And a security system with a loud alarm or flashing
lights is worth every penny. Display the decals in a place that is
sure to be seen by all.
